How to retain maths skills during summer holidays

Summer might be the time for Christmas, beach days, and school holidays but at Mathnasium it’s also time for maths fun!

There are so many ways children can practice their maths skills - even on holidays! They can try helping out with a special Christmas recipe, calculating distance on a summer road-trip or even counting the change from their ice-cream! Maths is all around us, so the opportunities are endless!

Your child can also get a head start for 2025 with our fun, tailored Summer School Holiday Program! On average, children lose 2-3 months of maths skills during the summer months. Our school holiday program ensures they stay on top of their maths skills and start the school year confident and ready to excel in maths.

Each session of our Summer School Holiday Program involves a 50% split of the regular, customised Mathnasium learning plan and 50% maths based activities that will feel more like fun than work. All while expanding their maths skills! We provide a supportive, energetic environment that makes learning fun. This approach ensures children get ahead without feeling like they are missing out on summer fun.

School holidays are the perfect time for children to catch up and get ahead, as they are less tired and better able to focus without the usual school term pressures on them.

For our existing members, the Summer School Holiday Program offers a session of your child’s usual one and a half hour customised Mathnasium learning plan and one and a half hours of our special summer activities. They can even bring a friend along to share the fun and enjoy the activities together.

For new members, this is the perfect opportunity to trial Mathnasium. Families are encouraged to pick a date and time that suits them and come along for a maths assessment to establish the ideal program to suit the individual child, then join the activities afterwards. You can come to one session, or as many as you like!

In addition to completing their customised learning plan, children can enjoy activities such as:

Penny Boats: Build aluminum foil boats to hold as many pennies as possible, exploring how shape and placement affect buoyancy.

Tessellation Art: Explore regular tessellations and use translational, rotational, and reflective symmetry to create your own tessellation art.

Egg Drop: Design structures with materials like straws and cardboard to protect a raw egg from a high drop, fostering creativity and problem-solving.
