NAPLAN 2025 is coming up soon, from March 12–24. This is the perfect time to start preparing so students can feel ready when the test begins.
NAPLAN is a test for students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9, covering four key areas:
- Writing: Students write a piece on a given topic, either as a narrative or persuasive essay.
- Reading: Students read a range of texts and answer comprehension questions.
- Conventions of Language: This assesses spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Numeracy: Students are tested on maths concepts like number and algebra, measurement, and statistics. The numeracy test is the final part of NAPLAN.
The results of NAPLAN help schools, parents, and education authorities see how well students are progressing and how learning can be improved. Understanding the test format can give students an advantage.
What to Expect in NAPLAN 2025
For NAPLAN 2025, students will experience tailored testing, where the difficulty of questions change based on their answers. If they answer a question correctly, the following questions will get harder. If they answer incorrectly, the questions will become easier. This format is designed to give a more accurate assessment of each student’s ability.
The numeracy test will include different types of questions, such as multiple-choice, text entry, and interactive formats like drag-and-drop. Students will also have access to online tools such as a ruler, protractor, or calculator when needed. Icons on the screen will show when tools can be used, and for Year 7 and Year 9 students, calculators will be available at certain points in the test.
A timer will be visible on the screen, but students can choose to display or hide it according to their preference. However, during the last five minutes of the test, the timer will automatically appear on the screen to give students clear warning that the time is nearly up. This ensures they are aware of how much time is remaining to complete the test.
Students can visit a website with practice tests to get familiar with the test format and question types. For more details and past NAPLAN tests, visit the official site: https://www.acara.edu.au/assessment/naplan
The R.E.L.A.X. Strategy for Test Success
A great way to reduce test anxiety and perform better is the R.E.L.A.X. strategy, which helps students stay calm and focused during the test. Here's how it works:
- R - Read and Re-read the Question Carefully: Encourage your child to take their time and fully understand each question.
- E - Examine Every Answer Before Choosing One: Teach them to look at all the possible answers before selecting one to avoid mistakes.
- L - Look for Information in Tables, Graphs, and Charts: Remind them to use visual aids like tables, graphs, and charts to find helpful information.
- A - Always Check Your Work!: Review answers before submitting to catch any simple mistakes.
- X - X-out Answers You Know Are Incorrect: Eliminate obviously wrong answers to make it easier to focus on the remaining options.
Test readiness isn’t just about studying—it’s about using the right strategies to feel confident. As NAPLAN approaches, practicing these techniques will help students prepare mentally and academically.
