As a part of our interview series about “5 Things You Need To Know To Be A Highly Effective Educator”, I had the pleasure to interview Derek Pipkorn.

Derek Pipkorn is the owner of multiple locations of Mathnasium Learning Centers, a franchise network of over 1,100 math-only learning centers that currently serve over 100,000 students. Prior to joining Mathnasium, he was a mathematics teacher for over eight years. Derek opened his first Mathnasium Learning Center in Milwaukee in 2017, and now he owns and operates around half a dozen franchise locations in the Greater Milwaukee area.


Thank you so much for doing this with us! Our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you share the “backstory” behind what brought you to this particular career path?

I dedicated over eight years to educating students in the Milwaukee area, cherishing the opportunity to impart a quality math education to young minds. While teaching was immensely rewarding, I felt compelled to explore alternative avenues of support for children.

My journey to Mathnasium was intertwined with my entrepreneurial aspirations. Initially pursuing a Master’s Degree in educational leadership with aspirations of becoming a principal, I eventually realized that the traditional educational path wasn’t aligned with my ambitions. Instead, I ventured into the business realm, where Mathnasium emerged as the perfect fit.

Upon entering Mathnasium, rigorous training awaited to ensure preparedness. Armed with years of teaching experience, I confidently tackled the initial math tests. However, it was a meeting with one the founders of Mathnasium, that truly ignited my enthusiasm. His attention and interest in my experience, served as a validation of my skills and a catalyst for our collaboration.

I brought a wealth of credibility to the launch of my inaugural Mathnasium Center, having been both a teacher and a member of the local community. This proximity to families facilitated seamless communication and understanding. Recognizing the struggles of students firsthand in the classroom, I endeavored to extend my reach beyond traditional education settings. Opening a Mathnasium became my avenue to assist students who faced challenges beyond the scope of conventional schooling.

Are there any stories you can share from your teaching career that made a particular impact on you?

One of the most poignant experiences from my teaching career revolves around a young girl named Abby, who initially harbored a strong aversion to math. Struggling and lacking confidence, her academic journey was fraught with tears and frustration at home. However, after just a month under our guidance, a remarkable transformation occurred. Through personalized support and engaging activities, we succeeded in fostering Abby’s confidence and reigniting her passion for math.

The true testament to her growth came unexpectedly during a visit to the local grocery store, where I stumbled upon an art display featuring works from elementary school children. To my astonishment, nestled among the pieces was Abby’s creation, adorned with a heartfelt declaration of her newfound love for math. Witnessing this profound shift from disdain to adoration encapsulated the power of education and reaffirmed my belief in the transformative impact of personalized learning experiences.

Are you working on any new projects that you’re excited about?

Summer is an incredibly bustling time for us, especially here in the Midwest where it marks the peak season with kids out of school. One of the most exciting projects I’ve been spearheading is Math Day at a Milwaukee Brewers game. Currently, we have an impressive count of over 7,000 teachers and students eagerly signed up, with expectations to exceed 10,000 participants by the event’s culmination.

Math Day offers a unique twist on the traditional field trip concept by immersing students in a math-focused experience at the ballpark. We’ve meticulously curated a comprehensive packet of materials tailored for students from third grade and above, brimming with captivating questions designed to gather data during the game. From tracking the number of pitches thrown to estimating distances and capacities within the stadium, the activities prompt students to apply mathematical concepts in real-world scenarios.

The goal extends beyond the ballpark experience itself; it’s about fostering ongoing engagement and learning beyond the event. Students are encouraged to bring their findings back to the classroom, igniting meaningful discussions and further exploration of mathematical concepts. Set to take place during the month of May, Math Day promises to be a pivotal event, merging the excitement of baseball with the enriching power of mathematics in an unforgettable educational experience.

Ok, thank you for that. Let’s now jump to the main focus of our interview. From your point of view, how would you rate the results of the US education system?

When evaluating the efficacy of the US education system, a critical consideration lies in our approach to student learning. At Mathnasium, we prioritize understanding each student’s unique mathematical proficiency level, independent of their grade or age. By customizing our instruction to address individual needs, we unlock the potential for substantial growth and progress.

One of the primary challenges inherent in traditional education systems is the expectation for students to progress uniformly through grade-level curriculum, irrespective of their mastery of foundational concepts. While some schools offer math interventions, these resources often have limitations and may not consistently support students who are significantly behind. At Mathnasium, we circumvent these challenges by delivering tailored instruction that adapts to the specific learning pace and requirements of each student.

Moreover, we recognize the significance of fostering an engaging and enjoyable learning environment — a cornerstone of the Mathnasium experience. By integrating elements of gamification, such as rewards and incentives, we create a space where students feel motivated and enthusiastic about their mathematical growth. This approach not only cultivates a passion for learning but also empowers students to embrace challenges and strive for excellence in their mathematical endeavors.

This creates an environment where parents are actively engaged in their children’s education, leading to better outcomes for students. Second, schools that foster community partnerships demonstrate great success. For instance, initiatives like Math Nights, where organizations like Mathnasium collaborate with schools, enhance the learning experience by providing interactive and engaging activities for families. These partnerships not only benefit students but also strengthen ties within the community. Overall, schools that cultivate a culture of collaboration, involving parents and forming community bonds, tend to thrive and attract families seeking a supportive educational environment.

Can you identify the 5 key areas of the US education system that should be prioritized for improvement and explain why these are so critical?

First, schools must prioritize offering more opportunities for professional development and career advancement for teachers. By investing in ongoing training, workshops, and conferences, educators can enhance their skills and contribute to a better learning environment. This not only aids in retaining teachers but also elevates the overall quality of education.

Second, addressing learning gaps among students is imperative. Many families have experienced significant disruptions due to the transition to virtual learning during the pandemic. As a result, students may have fallen behind in essential skills, leading to persistent gaps in their knowledge. It is essential to implement targeted interventions and support systems to help students catch up and bridge these learning disparities effectively.

Third, there is a pressing need to strengthen foundational skills, particularly in mathematics. Many students struggle with basic math concepts, even in upper elementary grades, indicating a systemic issue that requires attention. By focusing on foundational skills development and providing tailored support, schools can ensure that students have a solid understanding of mathematical principles essential for academic success.

Fourth, promoting transparency and accountability in grading practices is essential. During the pandemic, some students may have received inflated grades despite not mastering the material. As a result, parents may be unaware of their child’s learning gaps, leading to delayed intervention. Implementing rigorous grading standards and providing accurate feedback can help identify areas of improvement and facilitate targeted intervention strategies.

And finally, fostering a culture of innovation and adaptability is crucial for navigating future challenges effectively. The education landscape is constantly evolving, and schools must be agile in responding to emerging needs and trends. By encouraging creativity, embracing new teaching methodologies, and leveraging technology, schools can create dynamic learning environments that engage and inspire students to reach their full potential.

Highly effective educators possess a unique blend of qualities that enable them to connect with students on a deeper level and foster a dynamic learning environment. Here are five essential traits that contribute to their success:

Authenticity: Genuine care and concern for students are paramount in building meaningful relationships and fostering trust in the classroom. As a teacher in Milwaukee Public Schools, I encountered students facing significant challenges outside of school. By demonstrating genuine care and empathy, I was able to connect with them on a personal level and create a supportive learning environment where they felt valued and understood.

Whether dealing with unexpected disruptions or supporting students who require additional time to grasp concepts, flexibility and patience are essential. By remaining adaptable and patient, educators can create a supportive learning environment where all students feel valued and empowered to succeed.

Empathy and Understanding: Recognizing the diverse backgrounds and experiences of students is essential for creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment. By demonstrating empathy and understanding, educators can cultivate a sense of belonging and foster positive relationships with students. Through active listening and open communication, educators can address individual needs and provide tailored support to help every student thrive academically and emotionally.

As you know, teachers play such a huge role in shaping young lives. What would you suggest needs to be done to attract top talent to the education field?

Attracting dedicated and talented teachers requires a multifaceted approach that encompasses various elements, including fostering a positive culture and supportive environment within schools. When prospective teachers feel welcomed and valued from the moment they step into the interview room, it significantly enhances their desire to join the team and make a difference in students’ lives.

Reflecting on my own experience transitioning to a new school district, I vividly recall the palpable sense of excitement and enthusiasm among staff members during the interview process. It was evident that this was a place where educators were passionate about their work and dedicated to creating a nurturing learning environment. This positive culture not only motivated me to pursue the opportunity but also contributed to a seamless integration into the school community.

Furthermore, a supportive community plays a crucial role in attracting top talent to the education field. Whether through initiatives like referendums to invest in school infrastructure or providing resources for professional development, community support demonstrates a commitment to the success and well-being of both educators and students. Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote” and share how it was relevant in your life?

One of my favorite life lesson quotes is “How you do anything is how you do everything.” This concept has profoundly influenced both my journey as an educator and my role as an owner at Mathnasium. For me, it’s all about attention to detail and maintaining high standards in everything I do. Whether it’s ensuring effective communication, upholding integrity in decision-making, or striving for excellence in every task, this quote serves as a guiding principle in my approach to both teaching and running a business.

In my experience at Mathnasium, I’ve come to understand the importance of doing things the right way rather than the easy way. This mindset not only fosters a culture of excellence within our organization but also enables us to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the children we serve. By embracing this quote and applying it to my daily endeavors, I’ve learned that attention to detail and unwavering commitment to quality are essential ingredients for success, both personally and professionally.
