Frequently Asked Questions

Contact your local Mathnasium Learning Center with any questions you may have about our GMAS tutors. Here are some of the more common ones we get:

  • What is GMAS?

Georgia Milestones Assessment System (GMAS) is a statewide standardized test designed to measure students' proficiency in key academic subjects.

The GMAS includes end-of-grade and end-of-course measures.

    End-of-Grade Measures:

    • English Language Arts (ELA) for grades 3-8
    • Mathematics for grades 3-8
    • Science for grades 5 and 8
    • Social Studies for grade 8

    End-of-Course Measures:

    • For specified high school courses
  • When do students take the GMAS math test?

Students in Georgia typically take the GMAS math test in the spring, between April and May.

  • How do GMAS scores affect students in Georgia?

GMAS scores serve to evaluate students’ mastery of core subjects. In Georgia, GMAS scores, including math scores, can affect the students’:

    • School Grades and Transfers: Scores impact school accountability ratings and can influence students' ability to transfer between schools.
    • Promotion and Support: They determine if students meet grade-level standards, affecting promotion to the next grade and identifying who needs additional support.
    • Individual Progress: Detailed score reports allow parents and educators to monitor each student's academic strengths and areas that require improvement.

  • How does Mathnasium prepare students for GMAS math?

Mathnasium tutors help students build the skills and confidence they need to excel on the GMAS math test.

In our GMAS math tutoring sessions, we break down challenging concepts into manageable steps using various mental, verbal, visual, tactile, and written techniques. Our dedicated tutors empower students to truly understand and enjoy math while helping them fill in any gaps in their knowledge. We also focus on building the critical thinking and problem-solving skills needed for success on the GMAS and other math tests.

  • What teaching method does Mathnasium use to help students prepare for the GMAS?

Mathnasium’s GMAS math tutors use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students unlock their math potential. The Mathnasium Method™ promotes math mastery by:

    • Using Personalized Learning Plans: Using assessment-based insights, we create personalized learning plans that will put each student on the best path to math mastery.
    • Building on Existing Knowledge: Guided by the personalized learning plan, our tutors start with what the student already knows to help them bridge their knowledge gaps and develop solid foundations for math mastery. Adding new concepts in sequence, we work with students to increase their knowledge level by level while enhancing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
    • Teaching for Understanding: We teach math in a way that makes sense to the student, employing a range of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques to help them master any math concept.
  • Is there a difference between online and in-person GMAS math tutoring?

No, there is no difference between our in-center and online GMAS math tutoring. Our live, face-to-face online sessions are even led by the same tutors you would meet at your closest Mathnasium Learning Center.

  • What kind of assessment is necessary to enroll at Mathnasium?

To start their Mathnasium journey, students take part in a diagnostic assessment which allows us to identify their knowledge gaps and strengths.

We use the assessment-based insights to create a personalized learning plan that will put each student on the best path towards achieving their academic goals such as excelling on the GMAS math exam.

  • How often should my student attend math sessions to prepare for the GMAS?

Usually, we recommend 2 to 3 math tutoring sessions per week. However, our tutors may suggest a different frequency of sessions based on each student’s specific goals and needs.

We recommend starting the GMAS math tutoring early to allow the student enough time to learn and master the math concepts they'll face on the test.

  • How can I enroll my student for math tutoring at Mathnasium?

Enrolling your student at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:

    1. Find a location. Reach out to your nearest learning center, even if your student will be learning online.
    2. Schedule an assessment. Our diagnostic skills assessment helps us create a customized learning plan for your student.
    3. Book your sessions. Your local Center Director can guide you and your student in setting up a tutoring schedule.
