Frequently Asked Questions

Contact your local Mathnasium Learning Center with any questions you may have about STAAR tutoring. Here are some of the more common ones we get:

  • What is STAAR?

STAAR, or the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, is an annual standardized testing program in Texas that measures students' understanding and application of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in core subjects: mathematics, reading language arts (RLA), science, and social studies.

Students in Texas from grades 3 through 8 and high school participate in STAAR assessments.

Additionally, online tests in Spanish are available for students in grades 3 through 5.

  • When do students take the STAAR math test?

Students in Texas typically take the STAAR math test in the spring.

  • How do STAAR test scores affect students in Texas?

STAAR test scores serve to evaluate the students’ mastery of core subjects. In Texas, STAAR scores, including math scores, can affect the students’:

    • School Grades and Transfers: Scores contribute to school accountability ratings and may affect students' ability to transfer between schools.
    • Promotion and Support: They determine if students meet grade-level standards, affecting promotion to the next grade and identifying those needing extra support.
    • Individual Progress: Detailed score reports assist parents and educators in monitoring each student's academic strengths and areas needing improvement.
  • Does Mathnasium tutor students for the STAAR science sessions?

No, Mathnasium is a math-only learning center. Our tutors prepare students for a variety of K-12 math classes and tests, including the STAAR.

  • How does Mathnasium prepare students for STAAR math?

Mathnasium’s STAAR math tutors focus on the math concepts students will encounter on the STAAR.

Our specially trained tutors use personalized learning plans and a combination of interactive teaching techniques to help students bridge their knowledge gaps and enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary for success on STAAR.

As a result, as many as 90% of students have reported improved academic performance after enrolling at Mathnasium.

  • What teaching method does Mathnasium use to help students prepare for the STAAR?

Mathnasium’s STAAR math tutors employ the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students truly understand and enjoy math. The Mathnasium Method™ comprises:

    • Personalized Assessment and Learning Plans: We begin by assessing each student’s current skill level, identifying strengths and addressing specific knowledge gaps required for the STAAR.
    • Building on Existing Knowledge: Our personalized learning plans build upon what the student already knows, helping them bridge their knowledge gaps and gradually expand their mathematical thinking.
    • Math That Makes Sense: We teach math in a way that makes sense to the student, employing a range of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques in a supportive and engaging learning environment.

  • Is there a difference between online and in-person STAAR math tutoring?

No, there is no difference between our in-center and online STAAR math tutoring. Our live, face-to-face online sessions are even led by the same tutors you would meet at your closest Mathnasium Learning Center.

  • What kind of assessment do you require for enrollment at Mathnasium?

To start their Mathnasium journey, students take a diagnostic assessment which allows us to identify their math knowledge gaps and strengths.

We use the assessment-based insights to create a personalized learning plan that will put your student on the best path towards achieving success on the STAAR test.

  • How often should my student attend math sessions to prepare for the STAAR?

Usually, we recommend 2 to 3 math tutoring sessions per week. However, our tutors may suggest a different frequency of sessions based on each student’s specific goals and needs.

We recommend starting the STAAR math tutoring early to allow the student enough time to learn and master the math concepts they'll face on the test.

  • How can I enroll my student for math tutoring at Mathnasium?

Enrolling your student at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:

    1. Find a location. Reach out to your nearest learning center, even if your student will be learning online.
    2. Schedule an assessment. Our diagnostic skills assessment helps us create a customized learning plan for your student.
    3. Book your sessions. Your local Center Director can guide you and your student in setting up a tutoring schedule.
