Frequently Asked Questions

Contact your local Mathnasium Learning Center with any questions you may have about MCAS tutoring. Here are some of the more common ones we get:

  • What is MCAS?

MCAS, or the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System, is an annual statewide standardized testing program that measures students' mastery of essential skills across several subjects: English language arts (ELA), mathematics, and science.

    The MCAS assesses:

    • ELA for students in grades 3 through 8
    • Mathematics for grades 3 through 8 and 10
    • Science and technology/engineering (STE) for grades 5 and 8.

In high school, students are assessed in STE subjects including biology, chemistry, introductory physics, or technology/engineering.

  • When do students take the MCAS math test?

Students typically take the MCAST math test in the spring, usually between March and May.

  • How do MCAS scores affect students in Massachusetts?

MCAS test scores serve to evaluate the students’ mastery of core subjects. In Massachusetts, MCAS scores, including math scores, can affect the students’:

    • School Grades and Transfers: Scores impact school report card grades and can influence students' ability to transfer schools.
    • Promotion and Support: They determine if students meet grade-level standards, affecting promotion to the next grade and identifying those needing extra support.
    • Individual Progress: Detailed reports provide parents and educators with insights into each student's academic strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Does Mathnasium tutor students for MCAS English language arts (ELA) sessions?

No, Mathnasium is a math-only learning center. Our tutors prepare students for a variety of K-12 math classes and tests, including the MCAS.

  • How does Mathnasium prepare students for MCAS math?

Mathnasium’s specially trained tutors provide comprehensive preparation for MCAS math by focusing on math concepts students will face on the MCAS.

Our specially trained tutors use personalized learning plans and proven teaching techniques to help students bridge their knowledge gaps and enhance the critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to excel on the exam.

  • What teaching method does Mathnasium use to help students prepare for the MCAS?

Our MCAS math tutors employ the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students truly understand and enjoy math. The Mathnasium Method™ includes:

    • Personalized Assessment and Learning Plans: We begin by evaluating each student’s current skill level, pinpointing strengths and knowledge gaps related to MCAS requirements.
    • Building on Existing Knowledge: The student’s personalized learning plan builds upon what they already know, enabling them to bridge knowledge gaps and expand their mathematical thinking.
    • Math That Makes Sense: We teach math in a way that makes sense to the student, using a combination of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques to break complex concepts down into manageable bits.
  • What is the difference between Mathnasium’s in-center and online MCAS math tutoring?

There is no difference between our in-center and online MCAS math tutoring. Our live, face-to-face online sessions are even led by the same tutors you would meet at your closest Mathnasium Learning Center.

  • What kind of assessment is necessary to enroll at Mathnasium?

To enroll at Mathnasium, students take part in a diagnostic assessment which allows us to identify their math knowledge gaps and strengths.

We use the assessment-based insights to create a personalized learning plan that will put your student on the best path towards achieving their academic goals.

  • How often should my student attend math sessions to prepare for the MCAS?

Usually, we recommend 2 to 3 math tutoring sessions per week. However, our tutors may suggest a different frequency of sessions based on each student’s specific goals and needs.

We recommend starting the MCAS math tutoring early to allow the student enough time to learn and master the math concepts they'll face on the test.

  • How can I enroll my student for math tutoring at Mathnasium?

Enrolling your student at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:

    1. Find a location. Reach out to your nearest learning center, even if your student will be learning online.
    2. Schedule an assessment. Our diagnostic skills assessment helps us create a customized learning plan for your student.
    3. Book your sessions. Your local Center Director can guide you and your student in setting up a tutoring schedule.
