Frequently Asked Questions

Contact your local Mathnasium Learning Center with any questions you may have about ISASP tutoring. Here are some of the more common ones we get:

  • What is ISASP?

ISASP, or the Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress, is an annual standardized testing program that measures students' understanding of the Iowa Core Standards in three core subjects: English language arts (ELA), mathematics, and science.

Students in grades 3 through 11 participate in ISASP assessments for both English language arts and mathematics. Additionally, students in grades 5, 8, and 10 are assessed in science.

  • When do students take the ISASP math test?

Students in grade 3 through 11 take the ISASP math test once a year in the spring.

  • How do ISASP test scores affect students in Iowa?

ISASP test scores serve to evaluate the students’ mastery of core subjects. In Iowa, ISASP scores, including math scores, can affect the students’:

    • School Grades and Transfers: Scores impact school report card grades and can influence students' ability to transfer schools.
    • Promotion and Support: They determine if students meet grade-level standards, affecting promotion to the next grade and identifying those needing extra support.
    • Individual Progress: Detailed reports help parents and educators monitor each student's academic strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Does Mathnasium tutor students for the ISASP science sessions?

No, Mathnasium is a math-only learning center. We prepare students for a variety of K-12 math classes and tests, including ISASP math.

  • How does Mathnasium prepare students for ISASP math?

Mathnasium’s specially trained tutors focus on the key math concepts a student will face on the ISASP math test.

Combining personalized learning plans with a range of interactive teaching techniques, we help students bridge their knowledge gaps while enhancing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

As many as 90% of students have reported improved academic performance after enrolling at Mathnasium.

  • What teaching method does Mathnasium use to help students prepare for the ISASP?

Mathnasium’s ISASP math tutors employ the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students truly understand and enjoy math, including the concepts they will face on the exam. The Mathnasium Method™ includes:

    • Personalized Assessment and Learning Plans: We begin by assessing each student’s current skill level, pinpointing strengths and knowledge gaps specific to ISASP requirements.
    • Building on Existing Knowledge: Our method starts with what the student already knows, focusing on bridging knowledge gaps while leveraging their strengths.
    • Math That Makes Sense: We teach math in a way that makes sense to the student, using a combination of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques. Using proven teaching techniques, our tutors foster a supportive and engaging learning environment where students can not only enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving skills, but also gain confidence in their abilities.
  • Is there any difference between Mathnasium’s online and in-center ISASP math tutoring?

No, there is no difference between our in-center and online ISASP math tutoring. Our live, face-to-face online sessions are even led by the same tutors you would meet at your closest Mathnasium learning center.

  • What kind of assessment do you require for enrollment at Mathnasium?

To begin their Mathnasium enrollment, students take part in a diagnostic assessment which allows us to identify their math knowledge gaps and strengths.

We use the assessment-based insights to create a personalized learning plan that will put your student on the best path towards achieving their academic goals.

  • How often should my student attend math sessions to prepare for the ISASP?

Most students attend Mathnasium 2 to 3 times per week. Our tutors may suggest a different frequency of sessions based on each student’s specific goals and needs.

We recommend starting the ISASP math tutoring early to allow the student enough time to learn and master the math concepts they'll face on the test.

  • How can I enroll my student for math tutoring at Mathnasium?

Getting started with the ISASP math tutoring at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:

    1. Find a location. Contact your nearest learning center, even if your student will be learning online.
    2. Schedule an assessment. Our diagnostic skills assessment helps us create a customized learning plan for your student.
    3. Book your sessions. Your local Center Director can guide you and your student in setting up a tutoring schedule.
