Frequently Asked Questions

Contact your local Mathnasium Learning Center with any questions you may have about our TCAP math tutors. Here are some of the more common ones we get:

  • What is TCAP?

TCAP, or the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program, is an annual statewide standardized testing system that assesses all Tennessee public school students in grades 3-8.

    The program evaluates students in:

    • English language arts (ELA), mathematics, and science for grades 3-8
    • Social studies for grades 6-8
  • When do students take the TCAP math test?

Students in Tennessee typically take the TCAP math test in the spring.

  • How do TCAP scores affect students in Tennessee?

TCAP scores serve to evaluate students’ mastery of core subjects. In Tennessee, TCAP scores, including math scores, can affect the students’:

    • School Grades and Transfers: Scores impact school accountability ratings and can influence students' ability to transfer between schools.
    • Promotion and Support: They determine if students meet grade-level standards, affecting promotion to the next grade and identifying those needing extra support.
    • Individual Progress: Detailed score reports assist parents and educators in monitoring each student's academic strengths and areas that require improvement.
  • How does Mathnasium prepare students for TCAP math?

Mathnasium offers comprehensive TCAP math tutoring to help students build the skills and confidence they need to excel on the TCAP math test.

  • What teaching method does Mathnasium use to help students prepare for the TCAP?

Mathnasium’s TCAP math tutors use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students reach math mastery. The Mathnasium Method™ includes:

    • Personalized Assessment and Learning Plans: We start by assessing each student’s current skill level, identifying strengths and knowledge gaps specific to TCAP requirements.
    • Building on Existing Knowledge: Our personalized learning plans start with what the student already knows, helping them bridge their knowledge gaps and leverage strengths.
    • Math That Makes Sense: We teach math in a way that makes sense to the student, using a variety of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques to enhance their critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and confidence.
  • Is there a difference between online and in-person TCAP math tutoring?

No, there is no difference between our in-center and online TCAP math tutoring. Our live, face-to-face online sessions are even led by the same tutors you would meet at your closest Mathnasium Learning Center.

  • What kind of assessment is necessary to enroll at Mathnasium?

To start their Mathnasium journey, students take part in a diagnostic assessment which allows us to identify their math knowledge gaps and strengths.

We use the assessment-based insights to create a personalized learning plan that will put your student on the best path towards achieving their academic goals such as excelling on the TCAP exam.

  • How often should my student attend math sessions to prepare for the TCAP?

Usually, we recommend 2 to 3 math tutoring sessions per week. However, our tutors may suggest a different frequency of sessions based on each student’s specific goals and needs.

We recommend starting the TCAP math tutoring early to allow the student enough time to learn and master the math concepts they'll face on the test.

  • How can I enroll my student for math tutoring at Mathnasium?

Enrolling your student at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:

    1. Find a location. Reach out to your nearest learning center, even if your student will be learning online.
    2. Schedule an assessment. Our diagnostic skills assessment helps us create a customized learning plan for your student.
    3. Book your sessions. Your local Center Director can guide you and your student in setting up a tutoring schedule.
