Frequently Asked Questions

Contact your local Mathnasium Learning Center with any questions you may have about our PSSA tutors. Here are some of the more common ones we get:

  • What is PSSA?

PSSA, or the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment, is a statewide standardized testing program designed to measure student proficiency in core subjects including English language arts (ELA), mathematics, and science.

The PSSA assesses mathematics and ELA in grades 3 through 8.

Science mastery is assessed in grades 4 and 8.

  • When do students take the PSSA math test?

Students in grades 3 through 8 take the PSSA math test once a year in the spring.

  • How do PSSA scores affect students in Pennsylvania?

PSSA test scores evaluate students' mastery of core subjects. In Pennsylvania, PSSA scores, including math scores, can affect students in several ways:

    • School Grades and Transfers: Scores impact school accountability ratings and can influence students' ability to transfer between schools.
    • Promotion and Support: They determine if students meet grade-level standards, affecting promotion to the next grade and identifying those needing extra support.
    • Individual Progress: Detailed reports help parents and educators monitor each student's academic strengths and areas needing improvement.
  • Does Mathnasium tutor students for the PSSA science sessions?

No, Mathnasium is a math-only learning center. Our tutors prepare students for a variety of K-12 math classes and tests, including the PSSA.

  • How does Mathnasium prepare students for PSSA math?

Mathnasium’s PSSA math tutors focus on key math concepts specific to the PSSA math test.

Our specially trained tutors combine personalized learning plans with a variety of interactive teaching techniques to help students bridge their knowledge gaps and enhance the critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to excel on the exam.

As many as 90% of students have reported improved academic performance after enrolling at Mathnasium.

  • What teaching method does Mathnasium use to help students prepare for the PSSA?

Our PSSA math tutors use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students truly understand and enjoy math. The Mathnasium Method™ includes:

    • Personalized Assessment and Learning Plans: We start by assessing each student’s current skill level, identifying strengths and knowledge gaps specific to PSSA requirements.
    • Building on Existing Knowledge: Personalized learning plans build upon what the student already knows, helping them close their knowledge gaps and gradually expand their mathematical thinking.
    • Math That Makes Sense: We teach math in a way that makes sense to the student, using a range of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques to help them enhance critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and confidence.
  • Is there any difference between Mathnasium’s online and in-center PSSA math tutoring?

No, there is no difference between our in-center and online PSSA math tutoring. Our live, face-to-face online sessions are even led by the same tutors you would meet at your closest Mathnasium learning center.

  • What kind of assessment do you require for enrollment at Mathnasium?

To begin their Mathnasium enrollment, students take part in a diagnostic assessment which allows us to identify their math knowledge gaps and strengths.

We use the assessment-based insights to create a personalized learning plan that will put your student on the best path towards achieving their academic goals.

  • How often should my student attend math sessions to prepare for the PSSA?

Typically, we recommend 2 to 3 math tutoring sessions per week. However, our tutors may suggest a different frequency of sessions based on each student’s specific goals and needs.

We recommend starting the PSSA math tutoring early to allow the student enough time to learn and master the math concepts they'll face on the test.

  • How can I enroll my student for math tutoring at Mathnasium?

Getting started with the PSSA math tutoring at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:

    1. Find a location. Contact your nearest learning center, even if your student will be learning online.
    2. Schedule an assessment. Our diagnostic skills assessment helps us create a customized learning plan for your student.
    3. Book your sessions. Your local Center Director can guide you and your student in setting up a tutoring schedule.
