Frequently Asked Questions

Contact your local Mathnasium Learning Center with any questions you may have about OSAS tutoring. Here are some of the more common ones we get:

  • What is OSAS?

The Oregon Statewide Assessment System (OSAS) is a standardized testing program designed to evaluate students' proficiency in key academic subjects across various grade levels.

    The OSAS assesses:

    • English language arts for grades 3-8 and 11
    • Mathematics for grades 3-8 and 11
    • Science for grades 5,8, and 11

  • When do students take the OSAS math test?

Students in Oregon typically take the OSAS math test in the spring.

  • How do OSAS test scores impact students in Oregon?

OSAS test scores serve to evaluate the students’ mastery of core subjects. In Oregon, OSAS scores, including math scores, can impact the students’:

    • School Grades and Transfers: Scores contribute to school accountability ratings and may affect students' ability to transfer between schools.
    • Promotion and Support: They determine if students meet grade-level standards, affecting promotion to the next grade and identifying the students who may need additional support.
    • Individual Progress: Detailed score reports assist parents and educators in monitoring each student's academic strengths and areas needing improvement.
  • Does Mathnasium tutor students for the OSAS science sessions?

No, Mathnasium is a math-only learning center. Our tutors prepare students for a variety of K-12 math classes and tests, including the OSAS.

  • How does Mathnasium prepare students for OSAS math?

Mathnasium’s OSAS math tutoring focuses on the math concepts students will encounter on the OSAS exam.

Using our proprietary teaching approach, the Mathnasium Method™, our specially trained tutors follow personalized learning plans to address each student's knowledge gaps and guide them in building solid foundations for math mastery. • What teaching method does Mathnasium use to help students prepare for the OSAS?

Mathnasium’s OSAS math tutors employ the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students truly understand and enjoy math. The Mathnasium Method™ promotes math mastery by:

    • Using Personalized Assessment and Learning Plans: We begin by assessing each student’s current skill level which allows us to design a personalized learning plan to guide them in mastering OSAS math.
    • Building on Existing Knowledge: We start with what the student already knows to help them bridge their knowledge gaps and develop solid foundations for math mastery. Adding new concepts in sequence, we work with students to increase their knowledge level by level while enhancing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
    • Teaching for Understanding: We teach math in a way that makes sense to the student, using a variety of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques to help them master any math concept.
  • Is there a difference between online and in-person OSAS math tutoring?

No, there is no difference between our in-center and online OSAS math tutoring. Our live, face-to-face online sessions are even led by the same tutors you would meet at your closest Mathnasium Learning Center.

  • What kind of assessment do you require for enrollment at Mathnasium?

To start their Mathnasium journey, students take part in a diagnostic assessment which allows us to identify their math knowledge gaps and strengths.

We use the assessment-based insights to create a personalized learning plan that will put your student on the best path towards math mastery and achieving their academic goals, including excelling on standardized tests such as the OSAS.

  • How often should my student attend math sessions to prepare for the OSAS?

Usually, we recommend 2 to 3 math tutoring sessions per week. However, our tutors may suggest a different frequency of sessions depending on each student’s specific goals and needs.

We advise starting the OSAS math tutoring early to allow the student enough time to learn and master the math concepts they'll encounter on the test.

  • How can I enroll my student for math tutoring at Mathnasium?

Enrolling your student at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:

    1. Find a location. Reach out to your nearest learning center, even if your student will be learning online.
    2. Schedule an assessment. Our diagnostic skills assessment helps us create a customized learning plan for your student.
    3. Book your sessions. Your local Center Director can guide you and your student in setting up a tutoring schedule.
