Frequently Asked Questions

Contact your local Mathnasium Learning Center with any questions you may have about our ISAT tutoring. Here are some of the more common ones we get:

  • What is ISAT?

ISAT, or the Idaho Standards Achievement Test, is an annual statewide standardized testing program that measures students' mastery of essential skills across three subjects: English language arts (ELA), mathematics, and science.

The ISAT assesses ELA and mathematics for students in grades 3 through 8 and 11, while science is evaluated in grades 5, 8, and 11.

  • When do students take the ISAT math test?

Students typically take the ISAT math test in the spring, usually between March and May.

  • How do ISAT scores affect students in Idaho?

ISAT test scores serve to evaluate the students’ mastery of core subjects. In Idaho, ISAT scores, including math scores, can affect the students’:

    • School Grades and Transfers: Scores impact school report card grades and can influence students' ability to transfer schools.
    • Promotion and Support: They determine if students meet grade-level standards, affecting promotion to the next grade and identifying those needing extra support.
    • Individual Progress: Detailed reports provide parents and educators with insights into each student's academic strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Does Mathnasium tutor students for ISAT English language arts (ELA) sessions?

No, Mathnasium is a math-only learning center that prepares students in Idaho for a variety of K-12 math classes and tests.

  • How does Mathnasium prepare students for ISAT math?

Mathnasium’s ISAT math tutoring provides comprehensive preparation for the test by focusing on math concepts students will face on the ISAT.

During our ISAT math tutoring sessions, we break down challenging problems into manageable steps using a range of mental, verbal, visual, tactile, and written techniques. Our specially trained tutors empower students to truly understand and enjoy math, while helping them close their knowledge gaps and enhance the critical thinking and problem-solving skills they can leverage for success in the ISAT and other math exams.

  • What teaching method does Mathnasium use to help students prepare for the ISAT?

Mathnasium’s ISAT math tutors use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students learn and master math. The Mathnasium Method™ includes:

    • Personalized Assessment and Learning Plans: We start by assessing each student’s current skill level, identifying strengths and knowledge gaps specific to ISAT requirements.
    • Building on Existing Knowledge: Our tutors build upon what the student already knows, helping them bridge their knowledge gaps and gradually expand their mathematical thinking.
    • Math That Makes Sense: We teach math in a way that makes sense to each student, using a variety of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques to help them truly understand and enjoy math.
  • How do Mathnasium’s ISAT math tutors help students who are struggling with math?

We like to say that Mathnasium’s tutors are “teaching for understanding,” which means that we teach math in a way that makes sense to our students.

Combining personalized learning plans with mental, verbal, visual, tactile, and written techniques, we help students build knowledge level by level and truly understand the math concepts they will face on the ISAT math test.

  • Is there any difference between Mathnasium’s online and in-center ISAT math tutoring?

No, there isn’t. Mathnasium’s online ISAT math tutoring is the same as our in-person sessions. Students who choose to attend Mathnasium online will receive the same quality of live, face-to-face instruction and even work with the same tutors they would meet at their local learning center.

  • What kind of assessment is necessary to enroll at Mathnasium?

To start their Mathnasium enrollment, students take part in a diagnostic assessment which allows us to identify their math knowledge gaps and strengths.

We use the assessment-based insights to create a personalized learning plan that will put your student on the best path towards achieving their academic goals.

  • How often should my student attend math sessions to prepare for the ISAT?

Your local learning center will determine the ideal frequency of sessions based on your student’s skill level and specific goals. We typically recommend 2-3 sessions of 60 minutes per week.

  • How can I enroll my student for math tutoring at Mathnasium?

Getting started with the ISAT math tutoring at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:

    1. Find a location. Contact your nearest learning center, even if your student will be learning online.
    2. Schedule an assessment. Our diagnostic skills assessment helps us create a customized learning plan for your student.
    3. Book your sessions. Your local Center Director can guide you and your student in setting up a tutoring schedule.
