Frequently Asked Questions

Contact your local Mathnasium Learning Center with any questions you may have about MCAP tutoring. Here are some of the more common ones we get:

  • What is MCAP?

MCAP, or the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program, is a yearly statewide testing system designed to evaluate students' mastery of core subjects in Maryland public schools.

The MCAP assesses students’ mastery of:

    • English language arts (ELA) for grades 3-8 and once in high school
    • Mathematics for grades 3-8 and high school
    • Social studies for grade 8
    • Science once in each grade band: 3-5, 6-8, and high school
  • When do students take the MCAP math test?

Students in Maryland typically take the MCAP math test in the spring.

  • How do MCAP scores affect students in Maryland?

MCAP test scores evaluate students' proficiency in core subjects. In Maryland, MCAP scores, including math scores, can affect students in several ways:

    • School Grades and Transfers: Scores influence school report card grades and can impact the students' ability to transfer between schools.
    • Promotion and Support: They determine if students meet grade-level standards, affecting promotion to the next grade and identifying those needing extra support.
    • Individual Progress: Detailed reports help parents and educators track each student's academic strengths and areas needing improvement.
  • Does Mathnasium tutor students for the MCAP English language arts (ELA) sessions?

No, Mathnasium is a math-only learning center. Our tutors prepare students for a variety of K-12 math classes and tests, including the MCAP.

  • How does Mathnasium prepare students for MCAP math?

Mathnasium's MCAP math tutors prepare students for the test by focusing on the key skills and concepts outlined in the MCAP curriculum.

In our MCAP math tutoring sessions, we simplify challenging problems into manageable steps. Our tutors employ various mental, verbal, visual, tactile, and written techniques to help students bridge their knowledge gaps while improving critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • What teaching method does Mathnasium use to help students prepare for the MCAP?

Mathnasium’s MCAP math tutors use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students truly understand and enjoy math. The Mathnasium Method™ includes:

    • Personalized Assessment and Learning Plans: We start by assessing each student’s current skill level, identifying strengths and knowledge gaps specific to MCAP requirements.
    • Building on Existing Knowledge: Our learning plans build upon what the student already knows, helping them bridge knowledge gaps and expand mathematical thinking.
    • Math That Makes Sense: We teach math in a way that makes sense to the student, using a variety of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques to make math easy to understand and enjoy. This creates a supportive and engaging learning environment that enhances the student’s critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and confidence.
  • Is there a difference between online and in-person MCAP math tutoring?

No, there is no difference between our in-center and online MCAP math tutoring. Our live, face-to-face online sessions are even held by the same tutors you would meet at your closest Mathnasium learning center.

  • What kind of assessment is necessary for enrollment at Mathnasium?

To begin their Mathnasium enrollment, students participate in a diagnostic assessment which allows us to identify their knowledge gaps and strengths.

We use the assessment-based insights to create a personalized learning plan that will put your student on the best path towards achieving their academic goals.

  • How often should students attend math sessions to prepare for the MCAP?

Typically, we recommend 2 to 3 math tutoring sessions per week. However, our tutors may suggest a different frequency of sessions based on each student’s specific goals and needs.

We recommend starting the MCAP math tutoring early to allow the student enough time to learn and master the math concepts they'll face on the test.

  • How can I enroll my student for math tutoring at Mathnasium?

Enrolling your student at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:

    1. Find a location. Contact your nearest learning center, even if your student will be learning online.
    2. Schedule an assessment. Our diagnostic skills assessment helps us create a customized learning plan for your student.
    3. Book your sessions. Your local Center Director can guide you and your student in setting up a tutoring schedule.
